Embrace your main character life

You're sitting in a theater, watching a gripping film unfold. The protagonist faces challenges, makes bold decisions, and grows into a person they never thought they could be. You’re captivated, rooting for them as they navigate their journey. Now, pause for a moment and ask yourself—who’s the main character in your life?

For too many of us, the answer is hard to admit. We wake up, go through the motions, and let life happen to us. We believe circumstances—jobs, partners, finances, expectations—dictate our paths. It’s like watching a movie where someone else is writing the script. But what if you could flip the script? What if you could step into the starring role and live the main character life you’ve been too afraid to even dream about?

Main Character vs. Supporting Character Life

The Supporting Character Life is reactive. It’s passive. You feel like life is happening to you, not with you. Your thoughts revolve around other people’s needs, opinions, and judgments. Your actions are dictated by fear, obligation, or habit.

The Main Character Life is proactive. It’s bold. It’s messy, but also exhilarating. You’re not just watching the story—you’re creating it. Your thoughts align with your dreams, your feelings reflect your values, and your actions lead to the outcomes you desire.

Stepping into the main character role requires courage, and courage is often in short supply when fear takes the wheel. Here are some common reasons you stay stuck:

  1. Fear of Failure: "What if I mess up?" Failure feels like the end of the story, not a plot twist that leads to growth.

  2. People-Pleasing: "What will others think?" You’ve spent years prioritizing everyone else’s happiness, leaving little room for your own.

  3. Self-Doubt: "Who am I to want more?" You’ve internalized the belief that your dreams are too big, too impractical, or too selfish.

  4. Overwhelm: "Where do I even start?" When life feels like one big to-do list, dreaming feels like a luxury you can’t afford.

The good news? You can reclaim your story. Here’s how:

  1. Reframe Your Thoughts: Instead of, "I have no control," try, "I have the power to choose my response." Shift from a victim mindset to an empowered one.

  2. Reconnect with Your Feelings: Main characters feel. They’re not afraid to sit with discomfort, joy, sadness, or excitement. Journaling, meditation, or even just a 10-minute check-in with yourself can help you identify what you’re truly feeling.

  3. Take Aligned Action: Start with one bold move. It doesn’t have to be huge—maybe it’s saying no to something that drains you or saying yes to an opportunity that excites you.

  4. Own Your Results: Main characters take responsibility. If something doesn’t go as planned, they learn and pivot —you’re building a life, not chasing perfection.

  5. Dream Bigger: Ask yourself: "What’s the story I want to tell?" Give yourself permission to imagine a life that excites you – let your dreams guide you.

You don’t need permission to be the star of your life. You don’t need the perfect plan, the perfect timing, or the perfect circumstances. All you need is the courage to take the first step. The pen is in your hand. Write a story that’s worth living.
